I have had an FX6100 (Passmark 5396) not be able to keep up when I have had the quality settings turned up. There is no way that Plex or any other FFMpeg based transcoder will be able to transcode a raw Blu-Ray rip to 1080p with any kind of high quality on a CPU that is only scoring 2000 on Passmark. In my experience 4000+ is the bare minimum.

Like Plex, it also uses FFMpeg to transcode on the fly. Plex is a CPU hog unless you use one of the few Plex clients that can direct stream the source.Ĭlick to expand. They actually recommend a Core2Duo of 2.4 Ghz or better for 1080p transcoding and then follow it up with a Passmark recommendation of 2000+. I don't know what your definition of low-cost is but you won't get away for under $400 for a decent box with enough CPU power to reliably transcode. I would run the Ubuntu server headless using TeamViewer like I do now for Win-10. If I had to set up a new Plex server today, I would buy an i3 or i5 NUC install Ubuntu Linux 64-bit and run Plex for Ubuntu (64-bit). I built this server several years ago and the Shuttle has been a solid tank. If you want a little extra head-room go with an i5.

I rarely do 2 streams, but in the times I've done it, the i3 had no problems. The i3 has no problems streaming/transcoding full bitrate BD rips with HD audio down to 4Mbps/720p/2.0 to fit the limited capabilities of the TiVo-Plex client in my TiVo Mini in the kitchen. I have the Plex transcoder quality setting at "make my CPU hurt" for maximum quality. Once all libraries are listed, click Next, then Done to complete.I'm running Plex server under Win-10 on a headless Shuttle PC with an i3, 12GB RAM and 26TB disk farm (eSATA) - GigE backbone. If a library type you want isn't initially set up, click Add Library, select the type, name it, click Next, click Add Folder, select the folder containing the media, click Add, then Add Library.Manage the libraries to match the content you want to view, such as "Movie," "TV Show," and "Music.".

Create a free Plex account via the Plex website, as it will be required for managing your Plex Media Server and for streaming.
